How you interact with girls at the beginning will set the tone for the rest of the engagement. At this stage, it is critical to be intentional about building trust and engaging with a diverse group of girls from the start.
Recruitment
What it is
A set of activities to guide you through how to discover the participants that are likely to be overlooked, create a plan to engage them, and adequately communicate with them. This is done by uncovering the underlying reasons behind the lack of engagement and intentionally reaching out in ways that are tailored to them.

This is how they meet the rest of the team and how you foster an open and friendly atmosphere that is committed to their growth. This is also important in setting up safeguarding principles and agreements and familiarising them with your internal way of working.

Upskilling
Upskilling around anything girls may not be familiar with in your process is about unlocking the wisdom that already exists in the girls. Lived experience is their core expertise, and this stage builds their confidence and agency to use their voice and lead later on. It enables them to contribute to your process while guided by their lived experience.
What it is
An overview of Billion Girls CoLab program’s curriculum for girls that helps build their confidence, agency, and design skills.

Problem Definition
Girls bring a fresh lens to the true root issues in their communities—unlike many of us who work in the SRHR space and who have biases around perennial challenges and potential solutions. The problem definition stage is an opportunity to invite girls to inform the kind of problems that should be solved in their community. It cedes decision-making power and encourages them to have a sense of ownership of what will be developed.
What it is
A workshop where we support your team in shifting their mindsets around girls’ leadership and decision-making capabilities and ceding power to girls at this critical moment of determining the problem that needs to be solved in the girls’ communities.

Solution Development
Girls can push teams towards more nuanced solutions which consider their unique challenges and different life experiences. This stage engages girls closely in order to surface these nuances. It also enables them to develop a sense of ownership over the solutions making them more accountable for meeting the needs of their community.
What it is
Technical support around how to incorporate girls into your current solution development process. It includes methods, tools, and processes to ensure girls feel safe, comfortable, and able to contribute to the process.

Implementation
When communities have a hand in developing and implementing the solutions, it deepens the trust in and commitment to the relationship with the partner. The implementation stage keeps girls in the driver’s seat to build stronger ties with the community and make them leaders and advocates of the solution in their community.
What it is
An activity session that involves both the key implementing team and the girls, to decide on objectives, touchpoints, and community entry considerations. This builds the girls' leadership skills so they understand the process behind implementing a solution and are able to contribute realistic considerations necessary to implement in their community.

Feedback
Like any practice, girl-led design can be challenging and will change based on the nature of your program. Creating a culture of asking for and receiving feedback encourages girls to constantly learn from each other and enables your program to keep improving by staying responsive to the girls needs and ideas.
What it is
A set of activities to guide you through how to plan for, capture, and embed feedback into your program.
